Last night was the launch of Salford Type Foundry (STF) which has been put together by Graphic Design students from the University of Salford, along with lecturer Tim Isherwood. The typefaces that both students and lecturers designed were on display, so I took a few snaps of some of my favorite ones..

Decode Recode

Today was the opening of Decode Recode. It went really well and everyone got stuck in working on the uploaded content. I worked on a part of the video that me, Brett and Amelia had produced for it. One of the clips was of Brett dressed as Alan Turing writing one of the formulae that Alan Turing had written. I was able to animate some of the text on the formulae as I wanted it to represent his thinking of working out the code and rejecting the parts that didn’t work. Here is the finished result.

Gorilla Virals

The show is over (for now) but I was pleased to see our virals got about a bit online. So far between the seven virals we created, we have 822 views. This is a great result as we only let them out a week before the show.

This is one of my first attempts at editing actual footage in this way using more than one camera angle and adding effects in Final Cut. I really enjoyed it and I feel as though I have progressed with my editing skills. When I have edited before, this was for documentaries and more serious pieces and although I enjoyed doing those, it was nice to have a change and do something funny.

Salford Carnival

Yesterday was the Salford Carnival show and it was a great day. The portfolio surgeries where so informative and I got some really great advice. Stuart Reeves who is the Creative Director and founder of Seveer Media, was one of the people I spoke to. He was very encouraging and gave me advice on how present my portfolio work. He also talked through with me what I am passionate about (which is editing) and what I could do to increase this type of work in my portfolio. He suggested setting my own brief where I would edit as if in a real job. I have already been trying to get a few people together to try and set up a small film crew with my role as being editor.

After the portfolio surgery I was able to speak to Wini Tse who is the Creative Partner and founder of Code Computerlove and Jag Uppal who is the Front End developer at Cahoona. They too were both very helpful and friendly and I have been sent a challenge from Cahoona to complete in order to apply for work experience with them. It will be interesting to see how I do with that!

Near the end of the evening our Gorilla from the virals myself, Brett and Amelia did also made another appearance (thanks to Dan and Tim!). It was great seeing peoples reaction to him as he ran around the crowd!

All in all it was a really good day and I feel as though I brought home with me alot of valuable, informative advice that has definitely given me alot to think about as well as act on.

DNA Goody Bag Handout

Brett, Amelia and I went to deliver some goody bags to industry today. We visited some companies and invited them to the dna show on the 1st March. There were groups of us doing this today in different areas of Manchester but we were concentrating on the Deansgate area. A couple of the companies we visited knew us from placements and previous visits so it was good to go back to them and see what they were working on.

It all went smoothly today and we are feeling confident that most of the companies will be coming to the show. Should be a good night and we are looking forward to the event!
